The Simulation Football League has approved the sale of the San Diego Mavericks from previous players Optimus Cline and Liam Hammer to Dave Axis. The transition is effective immediately.

“A perfect opportunity doesn’t come along very often,” Axis said. “This happens to be such an opportunity. I’ve had the pleasure and privilege to play for, and win a chip with, one iconic franchise in Atlanta as well as help lead one of the best franchises in the SFL to the championship game at LSG. I now get those same chances in my former hometown. I love San Diego. It was my hometown for 11 years before settling in Knoxville, it’s a military town, and the Mavericks are one of only a few franchises that I wouldn’t feel the need to move. I am very excited and looking forward to leading this fine franchise in America’s finest city.”

Axis spent five seasons in the SFL before taking on this opportunity. He won a SFL Championship in his rookie season with the Atlanta Swarm before moving on to the Lone Star Glory, where he served as high as Team President.

“Thank you to Optimus for getting the team off the ground and for Liam’s efforts to provide assistance through the years,” said Commissioner Cameron Irvine. “Ultimately it was time for change in the organization that is in need of a fresh start and new momentum. I am looking forward to what the Mavericks can accomplish under Dave’s leadership as we rev up for a meaningful 20th Anniversary season around the SFL.”

Dave is a 2-time business owner including owning and operating the largest coffee distribution company in the Sacramento valley from 2003-2008. He sold that business to move to San Diego and has invested in, consulted for, and helped a variety of people start their own businesses.

San Diego just completed its fourth season in the SFL since being awarded an expansion team in Season 15 but have not found success on the field, totaling an 11-37 record, still looking for the franchise’s first playoff appearance. The team will remain in San Diego as the Mavericks, but a new look will be coming to the team for the 5th season Anniversary.

More details on the Mavericks organization will unfold in the coming months ahead of the team’s Winter 2023 kickoff in January.
