June 20, 2018

The Simulation Football League continues to bolster it’s front office and support staff today by opening up the application process for all seven vacant seats on the league’s new Competition Committee. This Competition Committee’s purpose is to  serve as a quorum of League Representatives to determine the best course of action to proceed when time is critical, but a rules decision must be made to keep the integrity of the competition of the SFL intact. These rulings come either during the season or off-season in a time when rules cannot be voted on by the Owners in the Owners’ Meetings that occur each off-season. The General Manager and Player Representatives of the Committee will also help brainstorm ideas for the off-season meetings and discuss rule proposals from owners before the Owners’ meetings are held.

“Many times during the league’s history, decisions that are not on the books are needed and those decisions fall on the top of the league and while we are the most impartial, we are also the smallest group, do not represent directly all interested parties and often take criticism for the decision-making process,” said Commissioner Cameron Irvine. “We are here to offer support where it is needed, but our primary objective is to have a league that operates as a well-oiled machine. That often comes into direct conflict with the sudden halts we have to take to settle disputes or make tough decisions. Many have come to us expressing the need for a committee or a desire to be on one that has representation from our entire community, one that has a deep passion for wanting to see the league succeed. We are here to deliver on that today. This will also help us progress faster as a league, as more time will be devoted to coming up with more solutions to problems, particularly during the often-ambiguous owner meeting rule change proposal period of the off-season.”

Owners and General Managers will vote in five owner members, one general manager member and one player member onto the Committee. They will all serve six month terms and can be elected to an unlimited amount of terms. Anytime the Committee is brought something by the league, the discussion will be recorded so people understand the tedious process it takes to formulate a fair and balanced ruling that effects a lot of people or member teams. This Competition Committee will begin serving the league effective July 1, 2018 and their terms will last through December 31, 2018.

The application process will last through the end of the weekend, Sunday June 24 and will be extended only if there are not enough candidates out to but not past Wednesday June 27.

“This is a chance for players and general managers who want to be involved on the league level, for players and general managers to move up the ranks in the league and for players and general managers to put themselves in a better position to own a team one day,” Irvine said. “For owners, this is their chance to leave their mark on the league and showcase their organizations as first-class to the rest of the SFL.”

Full Competition Committee details:

SFL Competition Committee
Mission: The Competition Committee will serve as a quorum of League Representatives to determine the best course of action to proceed when time is critical, but a rules decision must be made to keep the integrity of the competition of the SFL intact. These rulings come either during the season or offseason in a time when rules cannot be voted on by the Owners in the Owners’ Meetings that occur each offseason. The General Manager and Player Representatives of the Committee will also help brainstorm ideas for the offseason meetings and discuss rule proposals from owners before the Owners’ meetings are held.
Members: Members of the Competition Committee will be voted on by the Owners and General Managers of the teams of the SFL. There will be three categories of representation: Owner, General Manager, and Player. The Committee will be comprised of five Owner Representatives, one General Manager Representative, and one Player Representative. Representatives will serve six month terms.
Requirements: League members may apply for a role on the Competition Committee only if they meet the following criteria.
General: All Members of the Competition Committee MUST have the time to commit to being on call to participate in a discussion and vote of rules. This is not a position to be taken lightly or cursory. It is a responsibility to the League as a whole.
Owner: Only SFL team owners may apply as an Owner Representative.
General Manager: Only team members who hold the title of “General Manager” or “Assistant General Manager” may apply as a General Manager Representative.
Player: Only team members who are on a SFL roster and do not hold the roles listed above may apply as a Player Representative.
Selection: After the Roster Lock date of every offseason, the application process to join the Competition Committee will open. Anyone fitting the criteria listed above may apply. Owners and General Managers will vote on all applicants and anyone who receives the most votes for their category will be selected.
Process: The Competition Committee is not for submitting new rules or changing them mid-season. New rule sets that are needed due to the changing nature of the league will be brought to them for discussion, re-wording, then approval. The Members who are available to make a vote will count as the vote. The League Office will not wait for all Committee Members to be present as time is the issue and the greatest factor in the need of this Committee. If four members are present, the proposal needs a 3/4 vote; with 5 members present, a proposal needs a 4/5 vote; with 6 members present, a proposal needs a 4/6 vote; and with the full 7 members present, a proposal needs a 5/7 vote. If these majorities are not reached, the committee must continue to meet until a majority is reached and a compromise has been established. If a super majority cannot be reached in the time the committee has been given, the League Staff will provide the necessary amount of votes to swing the decision.
