Dallas topped Alaska in the Western Conference final in Season 8 to advance to its first championship appearance. The Alaska Storm didn’t forget the Ruffnecks ended their season and played like it dominating a 33-24 road win to kickoff the league’s 12-week primetime slate. Dallas lost their home opener for a second-straight season.
Alaska dominated the first half, building a 24-3 lead behind new running back Ash Odom, who finished with a whopping 232 yards on 36 carries for two scores. Odom was so dominant, the Storm didn’t need a strong performance from rookie quarterback Ron Cockren, who threw three interceptions without a touchdown. All eyes were on new Dallas rookie quarterback sensation Shabazz Psynergy, who is expected to be the league’s first dual-threat quarterback. While his night started rocky, he showed a ton of potential completing 30 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns, limiting himself to just one interception with 34 rushing yards and a rushing score. Alaska linebacker Andrew Francis registered 11 tackles and four passes defended, a standout performance.
Alaska (1-0) will host Sioux Falls (0-1) in its home opener in Week 2, while Dallas (0-1) will continue an early-season home stand against rival Houston (1-0) Sunday night.
